ODE TO THE WAVES
The sea is rough windswept waves
eat away at the shoreline A grain of sand at a time.
I search for driftwood to remind me of you
A hummingbird beak
A bleach-colored whale body Ornaments
For a possession To carry you away With each wave.
Each wave, Each loss,
diminishes the whole–
earth washed away
from the human continent along with a piece of myself.
Some indeed go willingly
Into the dark night A part of all of us died,
When you died. Now your
Words and deeds
Remain
I will carry them Until
I, too,
Venture into that night.
Ashes scattered Into water Words sung
Into the morning wind Sleep, fair sister
Rest now
The sea is calm.
