UNNERVED ~BY MARWAH M. SHEBL

UNNERVED

Walk
through your front door,
the house is dark,
even with all the curtains opened
and lights turned on
go to the nearest bathroom mirror,
a man lying on the floor,
blood pooling everywhere.
Not a drop was his.
The sound of a woman screaming a name
You,
standing over your body
holes where your eyes should be
arachnids nibbling at your brain
spiders crawling all over.
Feeling each and every
Eight-legged crawler biting
Until not even your bones are left
Blood and guts smeared on mirrors and windows
skulking into a bedroom you don’t recognize
a body sprawled out across the floor,
maggots feasting on entrails
mouth opened wide in a silent shout of pure terror
white teeth stained red
eyes cold and unseeing
half a skeleton hanging off the showerhead
some mutilated organs in the bathroom sink.
Blood pooled on white tiles
A sudden realization.
Seconds feel like weeks, months,
and minutes are like years
the sound of thunder and rain
Clack, tap, Clack, boom
no flash of light only sounds echoing
a ghost whispers in your ear
a song you can’t remember.
Open your eyes.
a waking dream
a Nightmare
unchanging

Surrounded by the shadow of night
Darkness turns to granite
So, from granite into a dying sun
Soon to become the Darkness again
“Just A Dream and Nothing More”
you say rushing out the front door
soaking up the warmth of the sun
taking in the sound of birds singing
and watching as they fly overhead
trying to blink the memory away.
