MATERNAL JOURNEY ~BY AGNES WONG

I wrote this elegy years ago for a funeral program. Maybe it can comfort those who lost a loved one before upcoming Mothers Day.

MATERNAL JOURNEY

Doctor’s nod began a pairing’s lasting journey

Nature’s call to plant a seed to sprout inside

She commits firmly from that day forward

Care and custody she’s chosen to provide

Two fated souls the giving stars arranged to meet

Her strength spent from labor renewed by wonder

The fisted fingers, pursed pout, and seeking eyes

Convinced she’ll never face any miracle greater

Years follow of nurturing and witnessing growth

Comfort and safety supplied as best she knew

Every success and setback tattooed in memory

Sharing values to shape an upbringing of virtue

A lifetime produces moments happy to sad

In glory her cheer roars as your loudest fan

With hurt and regret she aims to soften grief

Her concern cushions pain like a soothing hand

Living carries on with others in everyday spaces

As tears burn with reluctance to surrender her

Hold tight the reassuring feeling in your heart

The surviving love from no other but Mother
