IN THE LIGHT OF HER EYES
When I fall into your eyes, the world grows gentle, slow,
Like a hush upon the ocean when the evening breezes blow;
They shine along the shoreline of my wandering, restless mind,
Two steady little beacons for the parts I lose and find.
Your smile breaks across my day like morning through the blinds,
A soft and golden interruption to the storms inside my mind;
It’s a small, bright crescent moon that rises quietly for me,
And every time it shows, the world feels lighter just to be.
Your laughter is like festival drums, bright, unafraid and free,
It shakes the dust from my spirit and teaches it how to be;
Your heart is an open doorway with yellow light inside,
And in that home, my tired soul can finally rest and hide.
Explanation:
When I look at this poem, it’s really just me trying to put into words what she does to my heart. It is an ode to the love of my life, Priscilla. When I say I “fall into her eyes” and the world grows gentle, I mean that just one look at her calms my anxiety and slows down all the noise in my head, her eyes feel like small guiding lights that help me not feel so lost inside myself.
When I compare her smile to morning light breaking through blinds and a quiet little moon rising just for me, I’m trying to say that her smile cuts through my inner storms and brings a soft, new kind of hope and warmth into my day.
Her laughter, to me, is like festival drums loud, free, full of life and it shakes the dust off my spirit, reminding me how it feels to be really alive again. And when I describe her heart as an open doorway with warm yellow light, I’m saying that her love feels like home to me a place where my tired soul is welcomed, understood, and allowed to rest.
To the love of my life Priscilla.
